Not as many hummingbirds this year:
I love the feeling of the branches and leaves reaching high up to the sky until they become too large to fight gravity at which point they flop down like the drooping ears of a dog.
The purple blossom color, especially the brilliant fuschia/lavender of the blossom when struck by the sun, was difficult to mix with my limited palette. I kept thinking I needed my cobalt violet. Eventually I found the cobalt violet and discovered that Cotman mauve is almost identical.
Following the sketchbook study I attempted another quick painting in a small watercolor paper sketchbook. I used cobalt violet for the blossom.
